The information provided herein has been developed to provide a comprehensive treatment plan for fungal infections and/or fungal metabolites associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The goal of the proposed study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of Flagyl, a semisynthetic, broad spectrum antibacterial drug, in the treatment of fungal infections and metabolites associated with AS in patients with recurrent, severe AS. The study was designed as a single-blind, single dose, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of a single dose of 500 mg of Flagyl in patients with severe AS.
PATIENT RESEARCH1. Methods
A single dose of Flagyl 500 mg administered over 12 weeks, in patients with a clinical diagnosis of AS. Patients had a mean age of 55 years (range 45-79) and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 18.9 kg/m2. Patients were divided into 2 groups: group 1 (n = 18) received Flagyl (0.25 g/day for 1 week), group 2 (n = 18) received placebo (0.25 g/day for 1 week) for 12 weeks. Patients received Flagyl 500 mg (1 g/day) for 12 weeks, for 12 weeks, or for 1 week, at a daily dose of 0.25 g/day over 12 weeks.
